The saying, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see,” by the late poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau rings true in Alex Gross’s brilliant vintage portraits-turned-pop culture artworks.

The LA-based artist has held 10 solo exhibitions since graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, armed with a BFA with honors, in 1990.

While some might take these antique pictures to be just as they are, Gross sets his imagination free into the realms of Marvel Comics, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and so many more.

Preview but a snippet of Gross’s myriad ‘Mixed Media’ art featuring these past versus present remakes that are available on his website.
