The asymmetrical Nintendo Switch branding isn’t the only one that has caused a bit of havoc. A sketch of the logo for the console’s new game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, has inadvertently incited gun shooting paranoia in a high school.

A student from East Clinton High School in Sabina, Ohio—who was presumably excited about the video game’s forthcoming release on Friday, 7 December—had sketched its cross-haired logo on his classroom whiteboard.

“Dec. 7th; time to [Super Smash Bros. Ultimate logo],” the student wrote.

The symbol showed up on the whiteboard for two consecutive days, spurring four of his classmates to report it to the school’s principal, according to BuzzFeed News, which retrieved a report from Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

After speaking to the student behind the drawing, principal Kerri Matheny learned of the logo’s origins, and that the pupil “did not mean to cause an alarm.” Matheny then related his response to the four female students who reported the incident.

However, the situation fueled rumors, and even reached the ears of the district’s superintendent, Eric Magee, who received an email regarding “some student [who] was threatening to shoot the school.”

Magee reached out to the school’s resource officer, David Boris, who spoke to the student about the suspected gun threat. “He know[s] everyone thinks he [is] weird, but he would never hurt anyone,” Boris reported back.

In a letter shared on Twitter, the superintendent confirmed that the “threat is nothing more than a rumor.”

“The statement on the board was merely a statement of anticipation for the release of this new video game… We appreciate the reports of suspicion and would ask that anytime any of our students or parents see anything out of the ordinary, please report to the proper authorities as was done in this situation.”
