NASA has released a panorama captured by ‘Opportunity’ rover before it was taken out by a Martian dust storm in June 2018.

The panoramic photo entails 354 images stitched together, and was captured through the rover’s Panoramic Camera (Pancam) from 13 May to 10 June before being sent back to Earth.

NASA reported that the vehicle’s final resting place was in Perseverance Valley, situated in the western rim of Endurance Crater. The rover failed to communicate with NASA in June after a storm hit the area and engulfed its solar panels with rocks and dust.

The panaroma combines images that were taken through three filters that captured the images in different wavelengths—near-infrared, green and violet. Because Pancam did not have time to capture all the images through the green and violet filters prior to the incident, some of the photos remained black and white.

The ‘Opportunity’ rover retired 10 years later than its projected date in 2004, and was meant to sustain for only 90 days. Since its debut, it had proven to be a powerful tool for collecting data on Mars.
