Think you can ditch your smartphone for 365 days?

Vitaminwater is challenging a selected contestant to go smartphone-free for an entire year in exchange for US$100,000.

For an opportunity to get chosen, simply submit a post on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags, ‘#nophoneforayear’ and ‘#contest’, with a short write-up on what you’d do if you went without using a smartphone for one year, by 8 January 2019.

The successful participant, who will be picked on 22 January 2019, will be issued a 1996-era mobile phone. He or she will not be allowed to use any smartphones or tablets throughout the contest period, including those belonging to other people. Desktops and laptops, as well as gadgets such as Google Home and Amazon Echo, however, are allowed.

Vitaminwater intends to verify the participant’s honesty through a lie detection test. If the candidate goes completely smartphone-free for one year, the US$100,000 prize money becomes theirs. If they are successful for merely six months, they get US$10,000.

“We don’t think there’s anything more boring than mindlessly scrolling through your phone,” Natalia Suarez, Vitaminwater’s associate brand manager told CNBC. The brand sees this as “an opportunity to take that stance against routine and give someone $100,000 to do something uniquely awesome with their time.”
