There’s no guarantee that 2019 will be more smooth-sailing than the years preceding it; but it can be a comparatively meaningful year and hopefully set the foundation for more harmonious days ahead.

Former US president Barack Obama has a vision that communities will start having brighter days if people take small steps towards the changes they wish to see. He has delivered a chain of tweets that could inspire such transformations.

“As the year winds down and we look toward 2019, I’m asking you to make a commitment: find something you want to change in your community and take the first step toward changing it,” Obama tweeted.

He also recognized young leaders who have already taken initiatives to set forth changes within their communities and encourage improvements in their causes.

These people comprise: Dejah Powell, a Cornell University graduate working to bring more health and wellness resources to the South Side of Chicago; Moussa Kondo and Sandor Lederer, who are fighting corruption in their home countries of Mali and Hungary; Hong Hoang, the first Vietnamese person to visit Antarctica and a leader of a youth-led movement hoping to create a greener world; Chicago native Jonny Boucher, who opened a coffee shop providing emotional support after losing several friends and family members to suicide.

Hoping for better days is only the first step of the journey—little acts that help see those changes are what manifest them.

“What matters isn’t the size of the step you take; what matters is that you take it,” Obama concluded.
