The golden standard of fashion and beauty in the 1960s was widely attributed to be Twiggy, the lanky teenage supermodel with iconically long eyelashes, doe eyes, and an androgynous haircut.

Now at age 69, the style icon—born Lesley Lawson—has been officiated as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Twiggy was awarded her damehood by Prince Charles during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday for her contributions to fashion, the arts and charity.

“He’s really nice, and he said, ‘Congratulations, about time you got this. We’re all thrilled for you,’” she recounted.

Being the esteemed fashion icon she is, Twiggy attended the ceremony in a crisp three-piece cream suit by Stella McCartney, topping the look with a fascinator.

While she’s now Dame Lesley Lawson, the star prefers to be known as Dame Twiggy.

“I think Dame Twiggy sounds best,” she said.

Twiggy propelled to overnight fame at the age of 16 after being scouted from obscurity, and is dubbed the “world’s first” supermodel.

Recently, she’s been modeling for British retailer Marks & Spencer, as well as has partnerships with several charities including Vision Aid Overseas, which provides optical services to developing countries in Africa.
